Blushes to Keep You Beaming

Looking for a rosy glow? Today we are getting cheeky! 😉

I know there are those who are blessed with a naturally rosy complexion. However, I, like the long line of Irish women before me, am super fair-skinned and must hide from the sun like a vampire. Needless to say, I have been on the search for a good blush ever since my first tiny CoverGirl compact back in the 90s.

The good news is I have found 3 great options for those of you looking to boost your blush game—a cream, a gel, and a powder. First, to define some terms:

  • A cream blush is opaque and well-pigmented. It melts into your skin for a natural look.
  • A blush gel is translucent, and tends to give a “lit-from-within” glow.
  • A powder blush can be dusted on with a loose brush which allows for easily-controlled application. It can also include a bit of shimmer for a more highlighted look.

Here are my top picks–and all 3 are in the savvy price category. Enjoy!

Maybelline’s Cheek Heat

My first pick is Maybelline’s Cheek Heat, a gel-cream. It comes in a small tube, with a small price tag to match (about $8 a tube), but don’t be fooled—this little tube packs a big punch.

I use the shade “Rose Flush” which gives me a completely natural-looking glow. I apply it by putting a small drop onto angled foundation brush (Real Techniques makes this one that works like a dream). Then, I just stipple and blend it over my cheeks (on top of foundation). It blends smoothly and evenly, and never looks cakey or dry. It also can be layered to build a bit deeper color if needed.

My favorite part of this particular blush is that it goes the distance. In Florida, the heat and humidity can result in makeup melting off very quickly, but this blush stays put for hours. And, because it comes in a sealed tube and can be easily applied with fingers if no brush is available, it is also a snap to throw into a bag for quick touch-ups after beach or pool days. It’s a must-have!

Pixi’s Sheer Cheek Gel

For a gel, I love Pixi’s Sheer Cheek Gel. This also comes in a small tube, and it goes for about $14 at Target. My go-to color is “Flushed” which looks like an intimidating blood-red in the tube, but blends into a natural flush, even on my fair skin. The best part is that, although this is well-pigmented, it gives you a minute to get it blended into place before it sets. Also, because it is a gel, rather than a liquid, it is very easy to control.

Again, I squeeze a very small drop of this cheek gel onto my angled foundation brush, and then stipple and blend it over my foundation. You can also apply it before foundation for a more subtle glow.

Milani’s Baked Blush

Finally, my favorite powder blush is Milani Baked Blush in “Luminoso.” This lovely blush is a coral-pink color with just a hint of shimmer, and it is touted as one that compliments most skin tones. It gives skin a soft, glowy flush, and is also buildable if more color is desired. As a plus, I sometimes use this blush over the Maybelline gel-cream or the Pixi gel to “set” them and give them even more staying power.

The best thing about this blush is what a great buy it is. This sells for about $9, and it lasts a LONG time. The “baked” formula means that this blush is very dense, so each swipe of the brush only takes a bit off of the top. I love makeup that doesn’t require frequent re-purchasing! It is also more widely available now than it once was, since Milani products are now sold at Ulta, Target, AND Walmart.

So that’s the 411 on my blush faves. I hope one of these will help you get glowing!

Shine on, lovelies!
